What did I do with my free time before the quicksand of the internet? it’s hard to remember. practice hula hooping with my pink and white stripped peppermint scented hula hoop? sing American Pie and Stairway to Heaven back to back, starting over every time I forgot a lyric? read real books instead of fan-fiction? actually go outside? all of that passed the time, certainly, but it was never as much fun as unexpectedly finding random videos of your favorite actors that make you laugh out loud and ask wtf is this?
Example no.1: Alex & Tuckie web series Batman and Robin
I have no idea what this is. the date is 2014, which is when Joe graduated college, so is it a student film or just some friends poking fun at themselves and their profession? either way, it’s off the wall and quite enjoyable! the girl, Tuckie, has a very dry self deprecating sense of humor (she’s busy Thursday night because she has to move all the dirty dishes from her bedside table to the kitchen), while the guy (Joe) is so full of himself and the importance of all the nickle and dime acting jobs he’s landed. when he says he’s going to star in The Scottish Play at the Fuck Yeah! Theater Fall Fest and that he wrote a piece for Come-On-athon called ________ (I’m not naming it, because I don’t want to ruin the surprise), it took me completely off guard and had me crying tears of laughter!
Example no. 2: The Late Late Show skit The Truth About Steve & Jean-Ralphio
Jean-Ralphio is a character from the Parks and Recreation television show. people think Joe looks like the actor Ben Schwartz, who plays that character, and so they concocted a theory claiming that Steve Harrington from Stranger Things is actually Jean-Ralphio’s father. the skit shows them mirroring each other’s gestures and then they do some father son bonding. it’s silly but cute.
Example no.3: Nintendo Super Smash Brothers Amiibo commercials
there really is no justification for why watching Joe in these commercials is such a guilty pleasure of mine. they’re cheesy but I love his short hair and the way his voice cracks when he says he didn’t make the track team. and when he says ‘go get your mom and get one so you can get in’. or when the younger brother calls him Track Boy and he says ‘I don’t see what that has to do with anything’ and then he shakes the game controller. why do I like this so much? I don’t have an answer.
